What You Should Do When You Suffer a Car Accident?
After you go through a car accident, at first, try to keep calm. After that, follow these tips so that you can have the best results possible.
Turn the engine off and turn the hazard lights on. If possible, turn off the engine to reduce the chances of fire from leaked fluids and turn on the hazard lights to allow other drivers who approach the collision scene to drive slowly and carefully.
Make sure everybody is ok. If the airbags were deployed, for example, due to a more serious collision, it is important to verify if everybody is ok or if there is anybody hurt who might require medical attention.
Ask for help. After you verified the conditions of every one, call 911 (if that’s the case) to obtain help. Make sure you explain how it happened and how serious it is.
Document the scene. If you have a phone with a camera, take pictures from the collision scene from a lot of angles. Those images can be useful in case of a judicial action as a way to support a charge or defend you from one.
Remove the cars from the traffic lanes. If the vehicles involved in the accident can still be driven, it is better to remove them to the side of the road to wait for the authorities. This is an intelligent move to protect you, your passengers and other drivers from getting hurt again or end up with more damage, especially during bad weather or during the night.
Get information from the other driver(s). Make sure you get their name, driver’s license number, address and telephone number from the other driver(s) involved in the accident. Besides that, write down their insurance company and the policy number. Write down their car brand, model, color and license plate(s).
Don’t admit or attribute blame. When you talk to the other driver(s) in the accident, avoid admitting or attributing blame. Save this discussion to the authorities after they arrive at the accident scene.
